MY Voice Canada
MY Voice Canada App Prototype Design
Context
The two main challenges were to form and train a remote design and development team during the pandemic, to set up remote research, prototype resources, 18 rounds of A/B testing to create a high fidelity prototype, and resources for development to make things easier for the developer and his team.
The benefit of this project was to create a mobile platform for MY Voice Canada, a nonprofit organization that empowers to offer youth creative opportunities using positive media that leads to more confident leaders.
Takeaway opportunity to work with a remote team that led to more productivity, better communication, and ways for the team and I to stay consistently motivated to meet the expectations we had set to create the design prototype.
The solution a prototype that successfully translated MY Voice’s brand into a mobile experience, enabling youth to participate and set the foundation for future digital growth in the organization.
Just Ask (Question and Answer)
Users found asking personal questions was important for their own understanding.
Design Phase
Using the concept solutions and MoSCoW method, I led the designers on the framework to create prototypes for A and B user testing.
MoSCoW Must Have Design Prototype Features
Read
Read
Users enjoyed navigating this Must Have feature, they found blog posts to read by navigating through the categories to find topics of interest.
Watch
The different categories of videos on the app is something the users found was easy for them to navigate when looking for a video of interest to watch.
User Testers
“Users found the app prototype design was simple and well branded, easy to follow navigation, and no major distractions. There was more positive feedback and a good user experience with Version B, as users achieved their goals reasonable.”

A / B User Testing Insights
A and B design prototype research insights results from Affinity Mapping and Card Sorting were gathered of all the users who participated in the facilitation sessions.
Hosted a design sprint using Must Have from the MoSCoW method where the app team got to determine which features and sections users tested during the facilitation sessions.
A/B User Testing Observations
“Discovered that users were looking for an in app experience to connect with people, have their questions answered and posted up with their personal information protected. View, read, and watch video content that addresses current topics and rising issues.”
Concept Model Mind Map
A Concept Model was brainstormed to create a mind map of categories each concept would have under it.
User Interface & Visual Design
A graphic designer made the brands visual design and the team and I put together the UI Design components using the Flutter Material Design System to create the layout and UI components.

App SiteMap
Using the concept model we created the framework of the App Site Map to lay out the details of the app’s navigation.
User Flow
Made a User Flow of the prototypes architecture to show how the users would navigate the read, just ask, and watch features.

Design Phase Takeaways
Team and I
“More check-ins on team progress to reduce last minute project mishaps. Alpha testing from Play Store with the same and new audience to participate in A/B user testing. Results would have been quickly retracted leading to a public launch sooner by the designers and developer.”
Develop Phase
Oversaw Android App private launch on Google Play store, set up the developer and team to successfully launch. A private launch determined what bugs, fixes, and features functionality needed updating. The developer chose Android, as it was the most familiar operating system to the team.
MVP (Minimum Viable Product)
I set up resources to train and assist the junior developer to make a MVP (Minimum Viable Product). Developer worked on the Must Have Read features users wanted the most, from the MoSCoW method.
Develop Phase Takeaways
As a team lead I found it is important to communicate with the developer team for more frequent check ins to share progress of updates with the team, discuss setbacks early on to reevaluate existing deadlines, and recruit a second developer to help improve the work flow for the developers.
Market & Launch Phase
I put together funding to get the resources to promote on social media and other digital media platforms.
Social Media
Collaborated with the Team Coordinator, Social Media & Video Team Leads to have them create short marketing video concepts on the app to post on social media.
Business & Marketing
I worked with the Junior Business & Marketing Representative on methods for project funding and marketing approaches to get the team understand the business approach using marketing.
Marketing the app project for further hire, user testing through social media and other digital media platforms.Promotion of the app’s private launch on the Google Play Store.Business plan to figure out the best way to utilize our resources through collaboration with internal teams and external stakeholders.Market & Launch Takeaways
Laying out a business plan and promotional marketing of the product earlier in the project leaves room for revising and adapting the project to unexpected changes before the final launch date.
“After working on this project the team knew they learned a lot. Things that they felt could be done differently, time management, a landing page promoting the launch of the app, communication with other partner organizations both in and outside of their network to help promote the product.”
